A recent U.S. Surgeon General report indicates that one in five children and adolescents will face a significant mental health condition during their school years. Supporting mental health in students can remove barriers to learning and shift focus to the success of the whole child. Hamilton Southeastern Schools define mental health as a person’s overall emotional, psychological, and social well-being (mental health.gov). This differs from mental illness.
The Geist Elementary School counseling team has one licensed school counselor who work with loop with students. That means you will have the same counselor for your entire high school experience. Our counselors can assist with crisis intervention, suicide prevention, individual counseling, group counseling, and referrals. However, students and families do not need to be struggling to work with our counselors. Much of their time is spent course planning and building future ready, social-emotional skills like building relationships, communication, problem solving, persistence, and stress management.
HSE Schools also partners with Community Health Network to provide behavioral health services to students on-site in each of our schools. If you are interested in this service please reach out to your child’s school counselor to learn more.
